We are going through some weird times. We were moving on with our lives, and all of a sudden everyone all around the world needs to stay at home. Not being able to come and go may feel overwhelming (especially if your life happened mostly outside of your house).

I've been working mostly home-based for years, so I’ve developed some strategies on how to cope with this kind of situation. Now that so many of you are spending more time at home, I wanted to share some tips on how you can make this time easier on yourself, just so you come out better when we can return to normal life.

1. Turn off the news

This may sound strange as the first thing to do, but it's important. The media has a problem: their viewer figures go up when they report something scary. Fear makes you want to act, and the way we "act" is to try to get more information. Here's the problem - you can't do much with that information.

Sure, I'm not telling you to turn off all sources of information and stay in complete information isolation for weeks. That probably wouldn't be wise. What I'm saying is that you should limit the time the TV is on. You can get the idea of what's going on by checking on things just once a day. This goes for both mainstream and social media. Turn off the news, turn off the fear. There are things that you can do instead that do help.

2. Look after your health

Having to suddenly spend more time at home has probably messed with your existing health routine if you've had one. If you haven't had a wellness routine before, well, now you have time to start one.

The trick to establishing a home wellness routine is starting small. Take baby steps. There are these "home fitness challenges" you see online, where professional gymnasts do crazy tricks and then the expectation is for you to do the same. That's about as good for your health routine as news are for your peace of mind.

You don't need to be fit or in great shape to do simple things for your health. If you've been sitting on a sofa for the past weeks, go for a walk in the yard or just around the block. If you really need to stay indoors, do some jumping jacks. Just do something to get the blood flowing and your body moving. Then do it again the next day. The goal isn't to train for a marathon. The point is to do something simple for your health and to do it consistently.

If you have access to a sauna, take advantage of that. A sauna has many of the same health benefits as exercise, and it is one of the best stress relievers in the world!

3. Do something productive

If you're working from home, this is probably already taken care of. If you're not working, it can be easy to think that as you're "just at home", you don't need to do anything work-like. Well, you may not need to, but after a few weeks of doing nothing productive, the non-productive things get boring.

Use this time to your advantage. It's a great opportunity to do many of those things that you were too busy to do before. Take a moment to just stop and make a list of those things that you've always put off. Start with the easiest one.

You can also study and learn new skills. I don't think the world will be quite the same after this situation clears - this also means you have an opportunity to gain an edge. There are a ton of free courses online, pick something that interests you and make the "future you" a better version of yourself.

4. Keep in touch with friends & family

Well, this is an obvious one, but maybe you can call some friends you haven't been in touch with in years. Social distancing doesn't mean complete isolation!

Make a list of people you've had in your life but haven't heard from in a while. Ask them how they're doing. This will get you mentally "out" of your home. Maybe you can just commiserate over the situation, or even get new tips and perspectives on how to get through this.

Another fun way to stay in touch with your loved ones is to host online dinner parties, dance parties… the sky is the limit. Just make sure that everyone is safe and at home. That’s a great way to stay sane and beat the feelings of loneliness that may come during your social distancing period.

5. Relax!

Yes, the situation outside your home is messy, and the future may be uncertain. That's why it's so important to go easy on yourself. Push yourself a little bit on the exercise and self-development fronts, but don't feel like that's all you should be doing. And definitely don’t give in to the pressure of those people on social media that are completing a hundred different tasks during quarantine and bragging about it to the world. You don’t have to do everything and that’s okay. This time is stressful enough as is, so be careful not to add any unnecessary stress.

Take your time with everything. We have discussed before how amazing a sauna is to keep you relaxed, so if you already have a sauna at home, use it often. It is great for your health. If you don't have one, you can look into buying one. There's nothing better than being able to close the door of the sauna and leave the worries of the world behind it.

Final Thoughts

The times we are currently living may seem overwhelming, but the steps to not losing it while social distancing are actually pretty simple: staying away from news channels, listening to your body, trying to be productive and taking those old projects out of the paper, exercising a bit and keeping in touch with our friends and family. Those are easy and attainable goals that will help you beat that anxiety.
